Selling a car in Saudi Arabia: the short version

Selling a used car privately in Saudi Arabia takes four steps: price it against comparable cars, clear anything that would block the transfer, agree the sale, and move ownership online through Absher, the Ministry of Interior e-services platform.

The transfer costs roughly SAR 380 in total — about SAR 150 in government fees plus about SAR 230 in Absher service fees including VAT — and the buyer usually pays the Absher portion. Full step-by-step for the Absher transfer.

It will not complete while traffic fines are outstanding, while the istimara or periodic inspection has expired, or while a bank lien remains on a financed car. Until it does complete, the vehicle and any fine it collects are still legally yours.

The detail most sellers miss: the licence plate travels with the car by default. If the number is distinctive, you have to actively request to retain it before the sale — after which you can fit it to another vehicle you own, or sell it on its own. How to keep your plate when you change car.

Cars by city in Saudi Arabia

How It Works

STEP 1

Price it right

Start with a free valuation so you know the private-sale range before you set an asking price.

STEP 2

List the car

Photos, real mileage, service and accident history. A flat listing fee, no commission when it sells.

STEP 3

Meet and transfer

Buyers reach you directly on WhatsApp. Close the deal, then transfer ownership on Absher.

Pricing, paperwork and the plate — in detail

A private car sale in the Kingdom comes down to four things: agreeing a price, clearing anything that blocks the transfer, moving ownership on Absher, and putting insurance in the buyer's name. Everything else — the photos, the listing, the WhatsApp back-and-forth — exists to get you to that point with the right buyer.

What your car is worth

Resale value in Saudi Arabia is set by make and model, year, mileage, condition, service history and specification. GCC-spec cars hold their value better here than imported American or European spec, because buyers know the cooling and the service network were built for this climate. A clean accident record and a documented dealer service history are worth real money at negotiation time; a missing history is the first thing a careful buyer discounts.

There is no single "price" for a used car — there are three. A private sale, where you wait for the right buyer, sits at the top. A dealer trade-in sits well below it, because the dealer has to resell it. A quick sale sits between the two. Our free car value calculator returns all three so you can decide how much speed is worth to you.

What blocks a transfer

Ownership transfer is done online through Absher, and it will simply refuse to complete if something is outstanding. The usual blockers are unpaid traffic fines, an expired istimara or periodic inspection, and a bank lien on a financed car. Clear those before you list, not after a buyer is standing in your driveway. Until the transfer completes, the vehicle — and any fine it collects — is still legally yours.

The plate is a separate asset

This is the part most sellers get wrong. In Saudi Arabia a distinctive plate — short numbers, repeating digits, a clean letter combination — carries its own value, and it does not have to leave with the car. You can transfer it to another vehicle you own before you sell, or sell it on its own. KSAplate runs both markets, so the car and the plate can be valued, listed and sold from the same account instead of being bundled into one price that undervalues both.

Buying and selling cars in Saudi Arabia — FAQ

How do I sell my car in Saudi Arabia?
Price it against comparable cars, list it with clear photos and the real mileage, then agree the sale with the buyer. Ownership is transferred online through Absher: the seller starts the sale, the buyer accepts and pays the transfer fee, adds insurance in their own name, and confirms delivery. Ownership updates instantly — until it does, the car and its fines are still legally yours.
How much does it cost to list a car on KSAplate?
Free to list, and your car stays live for 30 days. There is no commission on the sale and no charge to the buyer. Optional paid upgrades (highlight, top and premium placement) exist but are never required to sell.
How long does a car listing stay live on KSAplate?
A car listing runs for 30 days from the day you publish it, and publishing is free. When it expires you can republish the same car, and the optional placement upgrades (highlight, top and premium) run for the same 30-day window if you want more visibility while it is live.
What do I need before I can sell a used car in Saudi Arabia?
A valid istimara (vehicle registration) in your name, a valid periodic inspection if the registration is due, no outstanding traffic fines, and no bank lien on the car. The buyer needs an Absher account and must put insurance in their own name before the transfer can complete.
What happens to my licence plate when I sell the car?
The plate stays with the vehicle by default and transfers to the buyer with it. If the plate is distinctive and you want to keep it, you can transfer it to another vehicle you own before the sale, or sell it separately — KSAplate is a licence-plate marketplace as well as a car marketplace, so both can be handled in one place.
How much is my car worth in Saudi Arabia?
Resale value is driven by make and model, year, mileage, service history, accident history and specification (GCC spec holds value best in the Kingdom). Our free car value calculator returns three figures — a private-sale range, a dealer trade-in figure and a quick-sale price — so you can see what you gain by selling privately rather than trading in.
Why do some listings show "Price on Request"?
Price on Request means the seller has chosen not to publish a figure, which is common on rarer or higher-value cars where they would rather discuss the number directly. Contact them by WhatsApp or phone to get the asking price — it is a seller preference, not a sign that the listing is inactive or already sold.
How do I contact a seller on KSAplate?
Every listing carries the seller's own WhatsApp number and phone number, and you contact them directly — there is no messaging middleman and no account needed to get in touch. Arrange the viewing, any inspection and the price between yourselves, then complete the sale through the Absher ownership transfer.
What should I check before paying a private seller on KSAplate?
Verify four things before any money moves: the car's history and accident record, that the seller is the registered owner named on the istimara, the mechanical condition (ideally through a workshop inspection), and that payment happens alongside the Absher transfer rather than before it. Never pay a deposit to someone who will not meet you in person.
How do I check whether a used car has unpaid fines or outstanding finance?
Unpaid traffic fines are attached to the vehicle record and block the ownership transfer until they are settled, so ask the seller to open Absher and show you the car's fine list on screen, dated that day. A car still under a bank loan carries a lien and cannot be transferred until the finance is cleared — if the seller is vague about either point, treat it as a reason to walk away.
Does KSAplate inspect the cars or verify the sellers?
No. KSAplate is a listing platform rather than a dealer or an inspection service: sellers enter their own details and photos, and we do not physically inspect vehicles or vet sellers. Treat every listing as a starting point and do your own checks — the istimara, the car's history and a workshop inspection — before you pay.
Does KSAplate handle the payment for the car?
No. Payment is arranged directly between buyer and seller: KSAplate never holds the money for a vehicle and takes no commission on the sale. The safest sequence is to pay by bank transfer at the moment the Absher ownership transfer goes through, so the money and the ownership change hands together.
Do I need insurance before I can drive a car I have just bought?
Yes. Saudi law requires at least third-party cover in the new owner's name, and the Absher ownership transfer will not complete until the buyer has added a policy in their own name. Arrange the insurance before the day you plan to drive the car away, not afterwards.
Can expats buy and sell cars in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. A valid Iqama and a Saudi driving licence let you register, insure and transfer a vehicle in your own name through Absher, exactly as a citizen does. The main differences are around financing and what happens to the car when you exit the Kingdom.
Which cities does KSAplate cover?
The whole Kingdom — Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca, Medina, Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran, Taif, Buraidah, Tabuk, Abha, Hail and the rest. Listings carry their city so buyers can filter to what is near them, and every seller is reachable directly by WhatsApp or phone.
