The Pre-Plate Era
The first automobiles arrived in Saudi Arabia in the early 20th century. Vehicle registration was an afterthought. The real catalyst was oil — ARAMCO brought thousands of vehicles and needed a registration system.
First National Plates 1950-1962
First-series plates were cast or pressed from mild steel and aluminium alloy, finished in white paint with black Arabic numerals. No letters. No emblems. Just numbers.
The Alphanumeric Revolution 1996-2006
1996 is the pivotal year in Saudi plate history. The system introduced three Arabic letters with three numerals remains the foundation today.
Cultural Emblems 2017-2026
The Moroor began issuing cultural emblem plates with Founding Day, Hegra, Diriyah, and Vision 2030 emblems. These plates command 15-40% premium over standard plates.
